It seems Mercury agreed with the rest of us, and is not releasing Samantha as the next single.

The next single is Pacific Coast Highway on 6 April! link
I am assuming that means there will be no video for Skinny Little Bitch. Hopefully a new b-side for PCH?

Michael1's picture

Awesome. My guess is that "Skinny Little Bitch" was the buzz single to bring fans and radio back into the fold, and now "Pacific Coast Highway" will be the proper single from the album. Which hopefully means a music video!

I just bought PCH and it is amazing!  People are going to say over produced blah blah blah.  Whatever it has harmony! COurtney is actually singing the harmonies.  She sounds different in this song, but a good different.  It is mature and well developed.  I just love it.  I think it is the best over the final versions so far (I am sure For Once In My LIfe and Never Go Hungry will be better)
Though I made add...the guitar is identical to Boys on the Radio, which is kind of hard for me to get over

Michael1's picture

It's definately my favourite of the 3 songs so far too. I think Billy Corgan is probably responsible for the Boys on the Radio aka Unsatisfied riff rip, but it doesn't really bother me too much.

Riri's picture

I dont really like this song. It's more a "b side" song. Not a single and not something inside an album.

black catz's picture

Cant get it on the UK ITunes - will have to wait for the album!!  Great art for it by the way.

Michael555's picture

I absloutely ADORE this song. It's definitely the best of the three.

Michael1's picture

Agreed. Those harmonies are fantastic. I think a lot of people are going to not like it at first because the demo version was just so perfect, but this version is brilliant too. Love the new ending.

I also think this song is amazing...There is definitely a boys on the radio guitar part happening in the beginning but it's not exactly the same, but fortunately I think it works beautifully.  I love Courtneys vocals on this track, she sounds amazing.  Pacific Coast Highway has such a celebrity skin album vibe to it....and I love the ending where it sounds like she's recreated the beautiful harmony between her and Melissa Auf Der Maur but only without Melissa.  I've always thought they sounded amazing together!!  I've always been more of a live through this fan over celebrity skin and that's why I also think skinny little bitch is an amazing song as well.  As far as the 3 final album versions of the new songs I've heard so far I'd have to say that for me Skinny Little Bitch and Pacific coast Highway are tied as the best with Samantha coming in second.  It seems like this album will be a good mix of all things Hole and Courtney Love from the beginning of her musical journey to the present and that excites the hell out of me!!!!  Hearing Pacific Coast Highway tonight finished for the first time has excited me even more for the entire album and the show in NYC @ Terminal 5 that I'm going to.  I didn't think it was possible.

I ws initially skeptical when Samantha was released and the fact that there are only 11 songs is a bit weak to say the least (and "Nobody's daughter" without Sunset Marquis just makes no sense to me! ) But since i heard PCH i'm now really excited especially with the last verse....and i loved the cow-bell thing on the demo....kinda miss it lol

Anonymous's picture

So glad the Linda Perry twangy country beginning and cowbell is gone, that was soooooo tacky. The new version is quite Celebrity Skin-ish, not bad, very radio friendly, makes me think of summer the way CB did.The solo though is pure shit, corny and uninspired. I think I see the direction of the album- I reckon Car Crash should have been on it and not Skinny Little Bitch as they are more in the vein of Samantha and Pacific Coast Highway. I hate to say it though but if only Melissa and Eric had been on this album it could have been something really great- I don't mind the new songs but you can hear the difference in playing and songwriting between session musos and people like Eric and Melissa. It could have been a great CB sequel.

vanalstyne's picture

yup. thats gonna be a hit. welcome back to your throne courtney.
i must say tho, they need to stop letting all the music out of the bag before the albums actual release cause theres only 11 songs. i have no heard three final cuts.
traditionally , with Hole I wait and wait intently for the album and it feels like it will never come and all the songs are big surprizes.
i guess there are sill 8 final cuts i havent heard. smiley
i really love this song and i love the final version .

WELCOME BACK MISS LOVE!This song is brilliant! The album cut is even better than the excellent demo.Courtney is true rock and roll royalty.THIS is the song that will pump this album up, and get it to sell as it should. This song is brilliant.I AM DYING FOR NOBODY'S DAUGHTER TO BE RELEASED!thanks for coming back to us courtney!

Glinda's picture

At first, I have to admit I didn't like the new version. But the more I listen to it the more I love it. I think it was because I was so used to the original demo since I'd heard it so many times that it was hard to get used to the changes. I'm so excited to see her on the 28th!

arthur's picture

oh, this is beautiful. the best of the three maybe, with skinny little bitch. i'm happy, I don't like very much the guitar sounding in the beggining... but the harmonies are beautiful! and the end is so powerfull. better than boys on the radio. more direct. really exciting!

holeinhead's picture

uhmm.. so, I really really Love these songs but.. it seems to me that these new versions have a slightly metallic sound.. a little confusing.. I really really Love the songs! but.. it's just that I am not convinced by the new sound.. I think that could be recorded very much better.. I fear that the album will comes out less well than they actually should be!! this album was to be a masterpiece but now this sound does NOT give it justice.. I'm sorry but it's my opinion.. I really Love Courtney, theHole and the songs.. but I am not convinced..

arthur's picture

agree with holeinhead about the metallic sound. I don't understand it either. does michael bienhorn thinks it's nice? to make the sounding more fake, more artificial and metallic? is it a way to give a post-modern feeling to old school rock songs? i really adore the songs, and I really like the arrengmetns and all, but this metallic sound that I can't explain is really anoying.

holeinhead's picture

Arthur, is exactly what I think! Why this metallic sound ? Why this confusion ? why? why? why?

Jake Giles's picture

heard the full version now. I like it alot. Just miss the bit where it goes really quiet and tender, and you hear her soft voice sing "your whole world is in my hands", where you could really hear she meant it, and then the piano comes in enough to make me actually cry (which i do to that part) and then she roars loudly "your whole wolrd is in my HAANNNDS and you know I'm drowning". That was a moment for me on the demo. The tracks are quite watered down but i think i should judge when i hear the album as a whole.

LiberationNYC's picture

Exactly Jake! The intensity from that moment is gone. When Marianne Faithfull released her album Broken English she referred to it as her "Frankenstein" and I thought Nobody's Daughter was going to be Courtney's Frankenstein. It sounds like Michael Beinhorn spent a long weekend on it.
Glad I am not the only one who thinks her vocals sound bizarre. It sounds like she's singing through a PVC pipe or something. Like a metallic cylinder sound, it's hard to explain.

LiberationNYC's picture

I'm psyched the album is finally coming out but I have to say I liked the mood of the Linda Perry work much better. It was dark, moody, layered, and there was more focus on Courtney's vocals which were brilliant. It really projected what an incredibly talented lyricist and artist Courtney is. Skinny Little Bitch aside, what Michael Bay is to movies, Michael Beinhorn is to music. It's too overly produced and yet some how the final songs sound more like demos than the demos did.

No Bonus's picture

Great, great, great. I just don't understand why people are still looking to heard the old not well done demos in this record, I guess its just about sound taste but I was expecting a very well production and amazing shape for every single song in this album and I'm getting it. So I'm happy with the final result of this songs that just did not work on me 5 years ago.

JohnPaul's picture

:X :X I liked the demo version better. It sounded more real. This version sounds like she's pushing it a little more than she should. I hope the whole album works together better then the way this came out.

LiberationNYC's picture

I don't think people are looking for ND to sound like the demos so much as there are some odd productions choices. The chorus on Samantha, "People like you f*ck people like me" is so guttural and angry but on the final, produced song she sounds like a group of cheerleaders. If Courtney is going to write about very deep and damaged adult orientated experiences, then the production shouldn't attempt to appeal to a bunch of 'grrrls' who don't exist anymore. It's been 12 years since the last Hole album. I'm more interested in how Courtney has grown as an artist and a musician and less interested in hearing a new 'Malibu'.

Jake Giles's picture

I cant help feel the lyrics and mood start really sad and end up happy, the original was sad, but i love it. I  get this vision that when courntey dies they will release all the demos as an album and it will be special (sorry to be weird) i feel this is a real driving anthem i really cant wait for summer and this song driving

8) ......This is a good version...........very complete.kisses.:X

black catz's picture

Hey thank you Mel for a great site again and for letting us hear the songs (especially those living where Itunes has not yet made the songs the songs available!!).  Well I've listened to it a few times and read comments and as a 'maturer' fan who can remember even buying POTI (ooopss!) and considering all the comments I can see all sides of them.  I'm loving this song, it has a CS feel to it and I played it for my hubby and he (as someone who isnt as big a fan as myself) agreed.  I can still feel the emotion in the song but agree that some of it at least has been lost in the production; guess it'll still be there in live versions.  I'm loving it, really am.  Yeah I agree that SLB has probably been the one to get the buzz around again and this is 'the' song.  I was thinking that Samantha would be the second single?  Maybe I'm missing something.  Some guys were mentioning crying to bits of PCL; I can appreciate that.  Every time I hear Samantha I get shivers and almost cry at the 'through villages of ether' bit where the mood of the song changes a bit.  The Jonathan Ross version especially does it.  Cant explain why it happens.

Jake Giles's picture

Although i miss the piano/soft part the days and days of regret, they havent happened and they wont happen yet is triamphant to me, thats the tear jerker now, it represents a positive outlook of survival (in contrast to the first part of the song). Love it. love it. love it. Driving anthem.

black catz's picture

I love it more every time I hear it.  Looks like UK CD release is going to be slightly delayed; other people have said this when they have pre-ordered it via Play, Amazon etc.  Argh!

Anonymous's picture

Yes! I agree with what others are saying, a great way to sum it up, " the mood got lost during the production" and that "metallic" sound is a bit too "polished" for her...It is as though she claims to have worked years on the album, but was in a rush to slap it together in the studio...do not get me wrong I am enjoying the "new" songs, just wish the rawness and emotion were more visable then from what I have heard thus far

arthur's picture

i'm just listenning to pch again. this song is pure pure lush!!!! it's love, it's sex, it's summer, it's platonic passion, it's deception, and miles and miles of regret, it's THE shit. "i look to you my shooting star". i'm in love.
