Great review of ND - Digital Spy
Thank you Glinda. Finally a review that gets it. The review on allmusic.com made me a little ill. Some people are so off the mark with the album it's ridiculous. This is the same deal Celebrity Skin got when it was first released. I just hope Nobody's Daughter gets appreciated for how good it really is in the years to come...
Don't worry about allmusic. I find their reviews very strange and inconsistent. For instance, they said that Melanie C's (formerly of the Spice Girls) solo album Beautiful Intentions was one of the best albums ever! I actually like some of Melanie's music, but that album was bad and was slammed everywhere else, but for some reason they loved it. Also, they gave bad reviews to Garbage's albums. Garbage is one of my favorite groups and I love all their records so I don't get why they didn't like it. I want Shirley to come back like Courtney has.
Very good points. I just can't get past the fact that most critics seem to want some sort of repeat performance of Live Through This, which is ridiculous. Grunge is dead and Courtney is now a 45 year old woman. Do they still want her to be singing about Pee-Girls and Garbadge Men at 45? As someone who favours songwriting and lyrics above all else, Nobody's Daughter is such a classy, lyrically strong and wonderful record that shows a remarkable amount of growth. I find it difficult to understand what critics actually want from her in 2010.
Here is another great review
At least some people are getting it!
nice review! Michael1, I ask myself the same question: why to expect another Live through this?
this is a nice review too
and this is also interesting
Here is another good review 411mania
It's funny how the reviews are exaxctly what Courtney expected. The ones that gave Americas Sweetheart rave reviews are all pissing over the recorld (and now claim Americas Sweetheart as bad). There is no such thing as a fair reveiew in most of these publications. They are so contridicive and miss the point of the themes entirely. many have claimed it is a self pittying album - did the reviewers actually even listen to the lyrics. The other bizzare thing is they are all stating Perry and Corgan as the main collaborators, with no mention of the re-writes, new versions, years of re-recording and Miko gets almost no mention in any review. Weird. Anyway, I was suprised how great it turned out and it has soaked into my brain in just one day. Awsome job Hole.
the rolling stone never fail to astound me with their shitty banal reviews
don´t like what critics have to say, preffer what real people have to say. I think somebody should say to rolling stone´s critics to shut the fuck up!!!
Pitchfork is so up it's own arse anyway it cant actually see the album for what it's supposed to be.
Isn't that Pitchfork review terrible? They completely missed the point. I expected better from a website that claims to be "the home of the in-depth review".
I love the album. I wish Car Crash was included and some live versions that sound even better then on the record. Letter to God and never Go Hungry again are amazing live and hopefully Hole/Courtney will put out a live cd
I also hope for a live album, maybe also a dvd?? I'm also wanting t shirts etc to be sold from the band website - wonder if/when this'll happen??
I really like this album, She has never dissapointed me and she still can write great moving lyrics,The melodies are both cathcy and interesting this album is like a perfect blend between live through this and celebrity skin.
the only review ive read so far was more than an insult i you dont get it dont write about it assholes.
from me it gets 4 stars it really stands out today.
There seems to be a real mixed reaction to this album. Some like the new direction, but most seem to be stuck on comparing it to her past records, specifically Live Through This. I can understand why a casual Courtney listener might be disappointed on the first listen - there are no exciting songs ala Celebrity Skin or Violet here. Hole were always a pretty exciting band, and the new album veers more into Marianne Faithfull/singer-songwriter territory than it does grunge. But Hole records were always so different from each other, and for me that is what separated them from the other bands of the time. The fact that Nobody's Daughter isn't some pathetic attempt to relive her glory days (Skinny Little Bitch aside) is what makes this record heads above albums like Zeitgeist and The High End of the Low. This is pretty much the same deal Celebrity Skin got when it was first released, some people get it, some people don't. I just hope that in the years to come people realise what an good record this actually is. Lyrically I don't think she has ever been better. And I hope the lukewarm reaction doesn't put Courtney off releasing any more records.
Thanks for including our review in your list. I hope I didn't write anything that will get me on the wrong side of the fans.
I love the new Hole album but what happend to the red lipstick, long hair and screaming?
Ok I got my CD today, I bought it online and now is here in Costa Rica. I haven't buy a cd since at least 5 years ago and now that I'm listening to Nobody's Daughter I feel like I was 16 again when I got Celebrity Skin and used to set down on my living room with all the lyrics and couldn't stop singing the whole record. Just weird how music can make you feel younger and so alive.
Just poked in and haven't bothered with any of the reviews...curious to see what others have written but I'd rather start with an untainted view. SO.....never expected this but I call 'em like I see 'em. To date this is the best release of 2010. And just on the heels of some highly anticipated stuff...I'd never have put this in the same room with MGMT and the new Slash record but seems a bomb went off on Tuesday. Given the list of writers and producers I guess I'm not surprised, but beyond that I always thought she could make a good record when she wanted to. Big start, big finish, and the rest of it has the kind of flow that makes a great rock album. It has enough diversity while still blending well...as in each track sounds like it belongs (maybe not like Rumors but then we're not talking about the next Classic Albums candidate...and who cares). Instant favorites were title track, SLB, PCH and Never Go Hungry which took me by surprise in a good way...how many of us instantly wanted to learn that song? In fewer words: Relevant (thank God) and I like the list of influences. And there's enough seattle left in the sound. But really, if we're talking best of the year so far it comes down to one thing - it feels right. I simply enjoy listening to it more than anything else at the moment.
